CAO Mengxue, male, Han ethnicity, was born in December 1987 in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, and is a member of the Communist Party of China. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Phonetics Research Department, Institute of Linguistics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. His research focuses on child speech acquisition and the phonetics of Chinese dialects, including speech development in children, tonal processing in both children and adults, intonation patterns in Chinese dialects, and phonetic contact between dialects and Standard Mandarin.

He received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Telecommunications Engineering with Management from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) and Queen Mary University of London in 2010. In 2011, he obtained a Master of Science in Speech and Language Processing from the School of Philosophy, Psychology, and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, under the supervision of Professors Simon King and Stephen Renals, focusing on speech recognition for under-resourced languages.
In 2015, he earned his Ph.D. in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, under the supervision of Researcher Aijun Li and Associate Researcher Qiang Fang. His doctoral research centered on neural computational modeling of speech perception and production. From June to September 2013, he was a visiting scholar at the Department of Phoniatrics, Pedaudiology, and Communication Disorders, Medical School, RWTH Aachen University (Germany), where he collaborated with Professor Bernd J. Kröger on research involving self-organizing neural network models.
From 2015 to 2017, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the School of Chinese Language and Literature, Beijing Normal University (BNU). From 2015 to 2025, he held a teaching and research position at the Institute of Modern Chinese, School of Chinese Language and Literature, BNU, where he was appointed as a master's supervisor in 2017 and promoted to Associate Professor in 2021. In February 2025, he joined the Institute of Linguistics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
